After your new natural stone surface is installed it will have a lovely polished finish because it has been thoroughly sealed with a food safe, penetrating sealer. But, as we all know, these surfaces are utilized frequently and can wear over time. Taking careful measures in the cleaning of your stone surface and regular professional sealing treatments will prolong the quality of your installation.
While the sealing process ensures a stain-resistant surface, it will not ensure that your natural stone is stain-proof. Stains are typically the result of improper cleaning, as these surfaces are porous and susceptible to damage from acidic substances. It is important to wipe up all spills immediately, as well as wash your surface regularly with a mix of warm water with a small amount of dish detergent. After cleaning the surface, dry it to avoid any evaporation of moisture as this can leave a film or water spot. Harsh cleaners and solvent-based degreasers should be avoided as they can degrade the sealer.
Be sure to use cutting boards when preparing food to protect it from scratches or chipping, and never set a hot pan directly on your surface. Heated objects can discolor your stone in a damaging process called blushing and this, unfortunately, is not able to be repaired.
While some surfaces do not require regular sealing treatments, in the cases of granite and marble it is advised that they are sealed regularly depending on the type of finish and location of your surface.
